Originally formed as an accompaniment group by our high school music director, The 8-Ball Band was hardly content to be a mere sideshow of the school choir. We began writing original songs, and released our first album, recorded and produced by Larry Sumner of First Take Audio, in June of 2003.
After graduating, we shed our school affiliation, changed our name to OctoSphere, and commenced with the rockin’! Our sophomore release dropped on September 11th, 2004, recorded and produced by Andrew Piepenbrink and Doc Edge, as well as long-time musical ally Sam Roberson of Off Track.
Members:
- Doc Edge - Vocals, Guitar, Bass, Slide Whistle
- Andrew Piepenbrink - Guitar, Bass
- Michael Nelson - Guitar, Bass, Synthesizers
- Jimmy Cataline - Drums
Now everybody in the place
Lend me at least one ear
It's time to start getting' down
'Cause Jimmy's Jam is here
Some of you may be surprised
That Jimmy jams again
That's why we're here to tell you
That the groove it never ends.
The groove's a little different
But it's pumpin' just the same
There's a man that you can thank for that
And Jimmy is his name
He's the rajah of the rhythm
And the sultan of syncopation
Jimmy's bout to prove he's got
The groove to move the nation.
When Jimmy lose his X-wing
He don't have to call for Yoda
'Cause when Jimmy wants to motor
He just hops in his Toyota.
Jimmy's wearing blue these days
So don't make no violation
'Cause if you're not getting down
He'll write you a citation.
Another lonely evening ends
And when you ask her where she's been
She says she worked hard
And then went to see a friend
And when your thoughts become too much to bear
you think of dropping in, but don't dare
'cause you drove on by, you would see she isn't there.
You might call it intuition
But you can't shake that suspicion
And every time she says your name
You know it just don't sound the same
She's been unfaithful.
You keep on trying to believe
That you're still all that she needs
But you know
That the walls are closing in
The way she walks the way she talks the way she mocks you
With a glance
It's like the sun's going down again.
(Chorus)
You thought if you were strong
Then you could keep on trying
But you're like a soda
Running out of fizz.
You know her face
Well enough to tell she's lying
But the thing that kills you
Is that you don't know his
Lift your head and don't be sad
Look around and wipe that tear away
There's precious moments to be had
Don't need to let another slip today.
There's one reason that I sing
And that's to say that everything's okay
Wipe those tears away
You were made so beautiful
There's glory in your body, soul, and mind
Your maker is so masterful
A better sculptor you could never find
And if you cannot trust in man
Remember that on him you can rely
The morning is so fine
I know what it's like to feel
Like there's no use, the end is sealed
And all you want to do is go away
And though it might not help you now
I'm praying that it will somehow
I'll say the only words I know to say
That angels fly
For you and I
And so let's try today
No one's better than you are
When you try to be all that you may
So get out there and raise the bar
Your next step forward's waiting to be made
So let's get up walk out that door
The time has come that you were on your way
Today's the day
You know the way
So wipe those tears away
Sometimes the hit you like a jolt from an electric chair
Sometimes they choke you like cyanide through the air
She's a kind of woman like I've never seen
She makes me lose my head like a guillotine.
Sometimes they tie you up and burn you at the stake
Sometimes they noose your neck and then cause it to break.
She's a kind of woman like I've never seen
She makes me lose my head like a guillotine.
I am sitting all alone I've got some jelly I can't use
I am feeling so low, I've got them all out of Peanut Butter Blues.
I wish my baby would come back home from the grocery store
Because we're all out of peanut butter, I can't take it anymore.
Eating peanut butter
Is so much fun
Where would we be without
George Washington
Carver
I don't care if it's Skippy
I don't care if it's Jif
I don't care if it's crunchy
Or it's creamy but if
I am sitting all alone with some jelly I can't use
I am feeling so low, I've got them all out of Peanut Butter Blues.
Darkness, my only friend
After miles of outlaw running
From my crimes on this land
From the men who want my life
Sunrise, burn off my skin
If you could peel away my sin…
But that magic's not yours
So I'll ride here in my refuge
My shadow home
(Chorus)
Good man, don't come here
If you knew what I'd done
And you'd been where I'd gone
you'd save your life
Highwaymen know
That to be where I've been
And to see what I've seen
Is to never be clean again
Silence, hold me to you
Keep men turned away
Shadow, don't leave my side
We ride swiftly
But never fast enough
Darkness in my eyes
Be my guide now as I roam
Six gun at my side
Where I ride that is my home
Chorus
Darkness, guide me on…
Dark Skies, whisper in my ear
Take me to a place that's far from here
And is it only
My heart that's lonely?
Tonight, guide me with a star,
Take me to a place where lovers are
But if it can't be
I'd be content to stay and dream
A dream that I could be
Lost in love so breathlessly
And when she holds me
True love is only a start
My love, come now and turn
Come turn the night into day
When you hold me
True love is only
A start
It's just a start
And all I can see is
Clear skies up ahead.
Six to thirty months
That's how long they say it lasts
Fair enough
I guess you've done your time
Thanks for all the times we shared
I'm sorry when I failed you
And if the evening's coming on
It's time I'm on my way
And you'll take down the photographs
And I'll be on my way
Photographs must fade every day
Like today.
I walk the speed of time
And I can't get past the moment
That's alright
I don't need to see tomorrow yet
And if we'd held on that much harder
Where would we be today?
Something tells me you'd be
That much farther away
And you'll take down the photographs
And I'll be on my way
Photographs must fade every day
Like today.
The one on the left she tore her man's eyes out
When he spied her with some other cat
She still gets around but he's got his nose out
Even if he can't see 'em he can still catch 'em with a baseball bat.
Once I heard her name was
Esmerelda Zelda
Call her EZ for short
She looks alright
But you'd best not bite
If you want to hold her
Then my friend just try your hand
But you'd best watch out
For her man
For her man
For her man 'cause I don't think he'd understand.
Nicoletta Georgetta is the name of the one on the right
She's a little bit better if you'd like to keep your sight
But if you ever forget her or you cause her any strife
She'll get out a beretta and she'll surely take your life
Nicolette Georgette, stands for no good
She looks alright, but you'd best not bite
If you want to hold her, then my friend just walk on down
But you'd best watch out
'cause if you make her frown
Make her frown
Make her frown you'll be six feet underground.
Captain's log, April 6,
I'm still not sure, I think that I
Might have found someone who
Could be the one, the one for me
I'll check my course proceed with caution
'cause I know that this might be
Another false alarm
Or even worse catastrophe
And all this time I've been passing through
Thinking I would never fall in love
But now
It looks like maybe that's gonna change
Captain's log, May the fifth
I think that this might be the best
Day of my life I just got back
And she said "yes" to me
Captain's log, June the first,
She said she loves me
Maybe I have miscalculated
I never foresaw this
(Chorus)
Captain's log
I fear like all my fears have left and gone away
I know I
Can no longer navigate the same old way
Captain's log, time and date unknown
I don't know where I am
I look around, and I can see that I think I'm alone
She has gone and if I'll ever come around I don't know
Revert to plan A and go with caution through the universe
(Chorus)
Captain's Log, maybe this is what was planned
Revert to plan A, I'm just following the high command.
Come on won't you let me know
Should I stay or should I go
Tell me that you'll always be
One who's always near to me
'Cause when you put your arms 'round me you're like a
HMBBBBBB
All around town
Well I stand here with mind in hand
Won't you let me be your man
Tell me that you'll always be
One who's always near to me
'Cause when you put your arms 'round me you're like a
HMBBBBBB
All around town
Why don't you go...
*Slide whistle solo*
Come on won't you let me know
Should I stay or should I go
Tell me that you'll always be
One who's always near to me
'Cause when you put your arms 'round me you're like a
HMBBBBBB
All around town
Ha! Hu! Da All Around Now!
All around!
All around!
Sour cream you know you taste so good
When I put you on my chips
You're the sauce that is the best to me
You're the king of all the dips
You look kinda like whip cream, when I put you on my food
But I know you're not, 'cause you got a pungeant odor
Telling me that your sour cream!
Well, please don't give me any guacamole
(guacamole)
I don't want no sour kraut
(No sour kraut)
You're the dip that makes me say Holy Moley!
(Holy Moley!)
All them other dips are out
(Them dips are out...)
You look kinda like whip cream, when I put you on my food
But I know you're not, 'cause you got a pungeant odor
Telling me that your sour cream!
Sour cream you go straight on my nachos
(On my nachos)
When I take you out the tub
Sour cream oh you don't make me macho
(Make me macho!)
You are still the dip I love
You look kinda like whip cream, when I put you on my food
(Reverend!)
But I know you're not, da dad ada da
Your sour goodness
Tells me that your sour cream!
Sour cream, sour cream!
Gotta gotta gotta gotta gotta gotta gotta gotta gotta gotta gotta gotta gotta gotta gotta gotta gotta gotta gotta gotta gotta gotta gotta gotta gotta gotta gotta gotta gotta gotta gotta gotta gotta gotta gotta gotta gotta gotta gotta gotta gotta gotta gotta get my sour cream!
My sour cream!
Ba do whop ba do ba Sour Cream!
The sun falls down with one last breath
And goes, it seems, to firey death
And in its place, the moon doth rise
Wearing the hue of dead men's eyes
The human world retires to sleep
And prays to God their souls to keep
As night wears on, the land grows cold
And evil creatures grow more bold
And do you know what comes out at midnight?
*Barking*
Puppies!!
Kitty-Cats!
Puppies, Puppies!
Bunnies!
Beware the puppies, my friend...
Beware the puppies...
Coming to take you away...

High, uh, welcome to Mocha Joe's
It's GREAT to be here, even though I'm not being paid...
Uh, check it out back at the counter, some GREAT frappuccinos
(Dude, they're so good!)
I'm going to play you a song now
(Play Free Bird!)
No
She knows, she can't see forever
Tomorrow is too far away
Two halves, in a hole together
Don't know why they feel this way...
And she's tried to be
Just what he wants to see
But she can't do
What he wants her to
And all that she relied upon is nothing when the feeling's gone
And she's been shocked and she's been thrown
She don't know why
She feels just like a girl, with her life unfurled
And she's unraveling too...
He looks at her and starts to tremble
Why don't he love her anymore?
He looks inside, tries to remember
But he can't bear to see the door
And he's tried to be, just what he wants to see
But he can't do, what she needs him to
And he's been broken, he's been thrown
Can't hold on, not on his own
And he's been shocked and he's been torn,
He can't hold on he feels just like a man
Held by trembling hands, and his hands shake too...
And so we see, a passion that was strong turned into dust
Who knows why it happens...
I don't know though, I tend to think it happens when it must
To bring a new begining
And I try to be, oh just what you want to see
But I can't do what you want me to
And I've been broken, I've been thrown
I can't hold on, not on my own
And I've been shocked and I've been torn, I don't know why I feel just like a man
Held by trembling hand, and my hands shake too...
Thank you, tha-thank you very much
(Yeh!)

Well Jimmy, he can drum so fast that we call him lightnin' hands
Just keep it on the jam...

Ever since then drummin's been how Jimmy get his kicks
Jimmy he was playin' drums when he was only five
If you don't believe, I'm tellin' you
The Jimmy jam no jive
Just keep it on the Jimmy jam
Well now I bet woman's hearts, for Jimmy they are achin'
I got to tell ya ladies, sorry Jimmy's taken!
Well, Jimmy's never cold outside

Bring it back in Michael
Bring it back to me nah
Hello and welcome back to Mocha Joe's
It's still great to be here
And, they're still not paying me
Go get some coffee
(Play free bird!)
No
I'm gunna play you a song now
So many times, we've knelt to pray
And after all, you've gone
You have gone away
But still, there's a few things left to say...
It's hard to handle, losing you
Going without everything you do
It's hard to handle, losing you
So hard to handle...
Right now I know, everybody's got to wear my shoes
And I know to, that we'll all
We'll all make it through
But still, it's so much to lose
It's hard to handle, losing you
Going without everything you do
It's hard to handle, losing you
So hard to handle...
I guess, I'll go home and be
The way I let you shape me to be
Break It Down Nah!
*Skat break*
Wherever you may go
May you always know
My heart is still yours...
Whatever you may do
God's love go with you
'Cause my heart is still yours...
Wherever you may be
If it's love that you need
My heart is still yous...
Thank you, thank you. Thank you very much
(Doc, Doc!)
What?
(Play Free Bird now, how 'bout it?)
How 'bout you take your coffee, and go home.
It'll taste just as good in the car...
Something's gone so wrong
With my hands I'm pleading, in my heart I'm bleeding
Taken much too long
In my brain I'm dreaming, in my mind I'm screaming...
After all this time it's just a sillouette of you
There's not much I can, do
Happened all along
Funny how the story, suddenly gets boring
You know I'd like to hear, all of the beginnings, and all of the endings
You dance among the moon and stars and nebulae forever
And I'll ever need is, you
*9-Part Harmony*
You dance among the moon and stars and nebulae forever
And I'll ever need is, you!
